Lebanon, once referred to as the “Pearl of the Middle East”, was once considered one of the top tourist spots in the entire region. The gateway between east and west, it was a playground for Europeans and the Middle East elite alike. However, in 1975 Civil War broke out and by 1991, when the war had finally ended, much of the country’s capital of Beirut lay in ruins. Since that time, the Country has been committed to rebuilding to its former self, regaining its title as the “Pearl”. Lebanon is a small country, covering only 10,230 sq. km., but as they say, “great things come in small packages”, and this is very true with all that this country has to offer. The landscape and terrain, is absolutely amazing. From the beautiful beaches touching the bright blue Mediterranean waters, to the picturesque mountains of Lebanon, directly to the east, there is something for everyone. What is so amazing is that tourists can actually enjoy a morning on the beach, and by afternoon be skiing in mountains near Faraya. Rich in culture and history, dating back thousands of years, tourists will be able to see the cultural influence of those who controlled the area through different periods in time. The Phoenicians who brought commerce to the area due to its close proximity to the sea, were major contributors to Lebanese culture. One can visit the seaside cities of Byblos and Sidon, to experience the ruins and influence of Phoenicia. The Roman influence is also very present in this country with many sites of Roman ruins that one can find. From the ancient public Roman baths located behind the banking street, in the capital of Beirut, to the temple ruins of Baalbek, located in the Bekaa Valley, one will appreciate the majesty of their work. To witness the ruins from the Umayyad period, one can visit Anjar, also found in the Bekaa Valley. One of the most astonishing natural sites in Lebanon is the Jeita Grotto. Located just 20 kms north of Beirut, these amazing crystallized limestone caves with their stunning rock formations, are being considered as a candidate to become one of the new “7 Wonders of the World”. An amazing piece of natural artwork, viewing it will take your breath away. Another great natural wonder of Lebanon are “The Cedars”. This famous area in the northern part of the country, is considered to be one of its most beautiful, with its ancient grove of cedar trees. The views are quite spectacular. The Cedar has played such an important role in Lebanese history, that it has actually become an iconic symbol that represents the heart and soul of Lebanon. Just below the ancient cedars, is the town of Bsharre, birthplace of Lebanon’s world-renowned poet, Khalil Gibran. Just 45 minutes east of Beirut, in the Chouf Mountains, tourists can visit Beiteddine, where tourists can visit the palace that was constructed by Emir Bechir II Chehab in the 19th Century. Today, Beiteddine houses a museum, as well as many festivals throughout the summer, including the famous Beiteddine Festival in which many famous artists such as Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, and Kazem El Saher have performed. Also located between the town of Beiteddine and Deir Al Qamar, is a small treasure, known as Castle Moussa. Built by a gentleman named Moussa Al Maamari, who as a young boy had always been infatuated with the Middle Ages, had always dreamt of building a castle from his own two hands. Facing much resistance, he set about to face the odds. Laying the cornerstone for his castle in early 1950’s, his dream became a reality nearly 50 years later with its completion. In visiting the nation’s capital, as one looks around, one is reminded of the “dark times” that weren’t so long ago. Amongst the beauty of the new development going on in the city, are stark reminders of the war. The battle scars can still be found on some of the building façades. However, there is a major project underway to revitalize Beirut’s City Centre. The area referred to as the Solidere, is a masterfully planned project that will focus on providing an urban design which will combine traditional and modern architecture, to maximize its benefit to the community, tourism, and trade. It was the dream of the late Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, to bring back this beloved city to its former days of glory, and from that the project evolved. With many pieces already completed, this project will offer a completely modern infrastructure, restoration of many historic buildings, a modern extension of the waterfront, a high-quality market and shopping venue, and carefully planned residential and public spaces which will include parks, belvederes, promenades, and trails to enjoy. All of this has been planned and developed while still preserving the important archeological and historical sites of the city. Great care has been placed in the restoration guidelines to ensure that the harmony and authenticity of these areas remain intact within the context of the developmental project. Beirut is alive again with tourism back on the rise. The city offers much in the way of attractions for tourists to see. Hotels and dining are in abundance, not just in the Solidere, but also along the seashore, and in and around Beirut’s famous Corniche area. This area, popular amongst tourists and locals alike provide fantastic views of Rauche, the famous rock formation that stands just a ways out from the Corniche in the Mediterranean Sea. One must also take time out to visit Hamra Street, known for its shops and outdoor cafés. Just a few km to the north of Beirut is the city of Jounieh. This coastal city offers many fine resorts, restaurants, and nightclubs. Jounieh offers tourists some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the bay and the coastal shores down to Beirut from its “Telepherique”, a cablecar that takes its passengers up mountain to Harissa, a town that houses the famous shrine of “Our Lady of Lebanon”. This city is also home to the famous Casino Du Liban, which was reopened in 1996 after major renovations and refurbishment. The Casino is a popular attraction for the Region’s elite who enjoy its gaming, nightclub, and concert facilities. On the shorelines of Jounieh guests will find many fine dining establishments to choose from. Many offer an al fresco atmosphere where one can appreciate the fresh sea breezes as they dine.
