“Haida libnan!!!” a common and frequently used expression uttered with pride by many Lebanese giving reason to their country’s distinctiveness and individuality.

Lebanon, a rather small country of 10,452 sq km based on the Mediterranean Basin, is a meeting point of three, continents thus it is considered as Asia’s gateway to western world, a crossroad where East meets West.

Home of Phoenician civilization, Lebanon embraces a distinctive historical heritage from Stone Age settlements (depicted in cave paintings) to Phoenician city-states, Roman temples, to crusaders castles and Ottoman fortresses.

It was in 1943 when Lebanon gained its independence from the French and waved for the first time over Rashaya’s fortress the national flag, two horizontal red stripes along the top and bottom separated by a proud green cedar in green against a white backdrop.

The cedar tree, the country’s national emblem and Lebanese pride, was mentioned in the bible Psalms 92:12 “the righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon” and the temple of Solomon was built from Lebanese cedar wood.

With four million inhabitants, Lebanon comprises 18 different religious sects under a unique political system based on democracy and power sharing mechanism.

Lebanon's official languages are Arabic and French.  English is business and trade language.  Armenian is also widely spoken since The Armenians are the largest ethnic group in Lebanon. Most Lebanese are at least bilingual, with Lebanese Arabic, and English or French. . Many Lebanese in fact speak a patois a combination of many languages, most commonly an Arabic-French mixture. For instance “Merci (French for thank you) Kteer (Arabic for very much)” OR “ Hi (English) keefak (Arabic for How are you) Ca Va (French for are you fine)”

Its geographical location on the Mediterranean and its diverse population composed of different ethnic and religious groups have vividly marked its literature, music and even its traditional cuisine.

An Arab culture evidently shaped and colored by western influences, Lebanese society is highly educated and very similar in its standards and “joie de vie” to the Mediterranean Europe.

Around the clock, Lebanon hosts international festivals (Elton John, Tiesto, Russian Ballet), world fashion shows and Galas, beauty contestants  (Miss Europe), economic forums, political financial, medical conferences and so on.

Along its cultural diversity, its rich historical heritage, Lebanon is blessed with a mild climate and 4 seasons which make it ideal for tourists all year round.

Endowed with a unique geography, Lebanon’s predominant mountainous landscape overlooks a 240 km of sea coast at the edge of the Mediterranean. The country is also famed for its vast green fertile Bekaa valley, renowned for its world-class wineries and vineyards.

The Bekaa comprises two world heritage sites classified by the UNESCO. Baalbeck and Anjar along with Byblos, Tyre, Quadisha valley and the Cedar reserve.

Aside this wealth of cultural tourism, Lebanon offers a wide array of activities for tourists and locals alike.

Whether seeking peaceful retreat in nature, Lebanon’s ecotourism  is booming with activities like hiking in Chouf cedar reserve, mountain climbing Mount Hermon. For adrenaline adventure, gushing rivers such as Al Assi is the best option for rafting and canoying. Paragliding down breathtaking high altitude mountains can guarantee an exceptional thrill.
